NSW is spoilt with outstanding beach towns, from local favourites like Yamba to hidden gems like Seal Rocks. But some stretches are simply too great to ignore. Case in point: Kiama, which has stolen the spotlight once again after being crowned NSW’s top tourism town for the second year running. Flanked by golden beaches, iconic natural wonders, and stylish boutiques, it’s no surprise this dreamy coastal pocket has taken out top honours. Here’s the full list of winners for 2025.
NSW Top Tourism Towns 2025
The NSW Top Tourism Town Awards revealed this year’s winners across three categories. In the Top Tourism Town category (for populations over 5,000), Kiama took out Gold, followed by Shellharbour with Silver and Ballina with Bronze. Newcastle claimed the People’s Choice.
In the Small Tourism Town category (1,500–5,000 residents), Merimbula won Gold, with Robertson and Gloucester picking up Silver and Bronze respectively, with Robertson also voted the People’s Choice. Meanwhile, in the Tiny Tourism Town category (under 1,500 residents), Huskisson secured Gold, Broke took Silver, and Millthorpe rounded out the list with Bronze and the People’s Choice award.
All three Gold-winning towns — Kiama, Merimbula, and Huskisson — will now go on to compete in Australia’s Top Tourism Town Awards, celebrating the very best in Australia.
Kiama is the Top Tourism Town in NSW for 2025
One of the best things about Kiama is its easy accessibility from major cities — whether you’re travelling by public transport or driving. Nestled along the stunning Grand Pacific Drive, it boasts mild temperatures and gorgeous natural landscapes, making it one of our favourite year-round getaways in NSW. Expect an abundance of coastal trails hugging the shoreline, prime whale-watching spots, and dramatic ocean views to boot. Some of our favourite things to do in Kiama include:
Kiama Ocean Blowhole
Fun fact: Kiama is home to the largest ocean blowhole in the world, and when the swell rolls in from the southeast, it puts on a spectacular show. Even better, it’s just a short stroll from the town centre and railway station, with a rock pool nearby if you fancy a swim.
Kiama Coast Walk
The 20km Kiama Coastal Walk is touted as one of the very best in NSW and an excellent day trip idea from Sydney. The total walk can be completed in around 6 to 7 hours, or you can tackle smaller sections. Find the full guide here.
Local markets
Held every Wednesday by the sea, Kiama Farmers’ Market is a local favourite where you can stock up on seasonal produce, fresh bakes, and gourmet bites. For a broader mix of fashion, jewellery, art, and more, the Kiama Seaside Markets pop up on the third Sunday of each month from 9am to 3pm.
Bombo Headland
A more underrated, but equally stunning, natural wonder in Kiama is Bombo Headland. A regular feature in TV commercials and photo shoots, its jagged rock formations give it an almost extraterrestrial feel.
Beaches
In the centre of town, Surf Beach is a great spot for a crisp seaside stroll, with waves crashing against the sand, while the more secluded Easts Beach offers a tranquil escape with sapphire waters and gentle waves. Plan your getaway to Kiama here.
