NSW is chock-full of small towns scattered around the state that are perfect for a little getaway any time of the year. From the excellent food scene in Narooma to whale-watching in Eden, the idyllic beaches of Yamba, and the wild swimming holes of Bellingen, these destinations may be small in size but not in character. One hidden gem that offers the perfect day trip is Robertson, the artistic heart of the Southern Highlands. Nestled amidst lush green pastures, beautiful waterfalls, and quirky small-town attractions, this tranquil town will keep you busy and entertained on a day trip or weekend getaway. Here’s how to plan a perfect trip to Robertson.
Things to do: Waterfalls, The ‘Big Potato’ and other local attractions

It may be small in size but Robertson is a lovely little place for your local bucket list. There’s something for everyone and much like the neighbouring towns of Kangaroo Valley, Berry, and Bowral, good views and natural scenery are available in abundance.
Fun fact: if you thought the beloved Oscar-nominated film Babe was shot in the English countryside, think again. It was Robertson that was the setting of Hoggett Farm in the Aussie classic. A drive around the rolling green countryside will reveal iconic locations, including Fountaindale Grand Manor and Ranelagh House (now The Robertson Hotel), both on the same street as the fictional farm — where you can even spend the night.
The real can’t-miss attraction of Robertson though is the Big Potato, undoubtedly one of Australia’s quirkiest big things. Built in 1977, the giant potato stands as a proud symbol of the region’s main crop. And yes, it’s hollow inside so visitors can step right in, where they will be greeted by a mashed potato-inspired interior.
Equally enticing are the waterfalls in and around Robertson, some of the very best in NSW. Stop by the two-tiered Belmore Falls that flows into a beautifully dense valley or head to the stunning Carrington Falls with picnic and barbecue facilities nearby. Another hidden gem is Nellies Glen, a beautiful waterfall that drops into an emerald-hued swimming hole, right next to Carrington Falls. A short 10-minute drive from Robertson will bring you to the famous Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures, where you can zoom across Australia’s highest zipline and stroll along the 1.5-kilometre Treetop Walk.
Where to eat: Local pie shops, bakeries and cafes

It’s surprising to find pie shops, bakeries, and quality cafes in a small town but Robertson sure delivers.
Some famous local spots to add to your list include the famous Robertson Pie Shop serving a mouthwatering selection of savoury and sweet pies including steak and mushroom, beef bourguignon, lemon meringue, caramel macadamia tarts and so much more and the equally renowned Robertson Cheese Factory where you can get your hands on a range of cheese, condiments, gelato, lunches and more.
Also recommended are the farm-fresh meals of Moonacres Kitchen, the plant-based milk alternatives and simple vegan lunches of The Buzz Cafe conveniently located next to the Big Potato and flavourful Thai eats at Thai Jad Jaan. Don’t forget to stop by the Euro-inspired Pecora Dairy Cheese and Wine for more cheese and excellent wine and Mumma’s Country Kitchen for wholesome homemade meals and gelato.
The best time to visit Robertson

Robertson is a consistently pleasant destination to visit all year round so plan your visit based on preference. It’s especially cosy during winter and the sun-splashed days of summer are excellent for exploring the waterfalls and nearby walking trails. Autumn and spring offer colourful foliage, crisp air, and mild temps perfect for outdoor exploration. Read more about Robertson and find accommodation options here.
