Byron Bay was once on everyone’s radar as the ultimate coastal retreat and it’s easy to see why. One of Australia’s most iconic destinations, the seaside town has set the benchmark with its gin-clear waters, spectacular beaches, emerald rainforests, and laidback lifestyle. But its burgeoning popularity means it’s more overtouristed than others. If you’re looking to experience some of that charm without battling the crowds, consider driving south, and then keep going till you reach the town of Yamba. Coastal walks, adorable boutiques, amazing dining options, and a wealth of water activities await in this hidden gem. It’s referred to as Byron Bay’s little cousin but one could argue it’s better — there is no traffic, the beaches are yours to enjoy and you can see the best of the town without the throng of tourists. Yamba was also recently named the second-best hidden gem in all of Australia in a new ranking so now is the perfect time to plan a visit. Here are some things to do in this charming seaside town.
Yamba, NSW
While Byron Bay is more known among locals and tourists alike, Yamba is a worthy gem to add to your bucket list. For the longest time, it was skipped in favour of its more glamorous neighbour but that’s changing as more people get wind of its pocked-sized charms. With stunning views to feast your eyes on, breezy coastal air, fresh seafood that is calling your name, and plenty of recreational activities to keep you busy, Yamba is the ideal spring and summer escape. Here’s how to plan a trip around one of NSW’s less-visited towns.
1. Discover the beaches
It wouldn’t be an NSW town without a few beaches to its name. Yamba offers not one but 5 spectacular beaches, each with something new and different for travellers. These are also the town’s main drawcard so a visit is highly recommended. Head to the Main Beach for a swim in its ocean pool and a bite at the surf club and café or make your way to Pippi Beach and walk along its seemingly endless stretch of golden sand. The blue and green natural pools of Angourie are well worth a drive out while Turners Beach is a popular swimming and surfing spot. For a secluded retreat consider Covent Beach which you can very likely get to yourself. Angourie Point is by far the most popular surfing spot in Yamba and a huge draw for surfers around the world.
2. Shop at the local markets
The coast of Yamba gets all the love but the local markets are an excellent way to immerse yourself in the community and while away a weekend morning. The popular Yamba River Markets are held on the fourth Sunday of the month and feature 120 stalls with goods ranging from fresh fruit and vegetables, jewellery, clothing, second-hand furniture, and plenty of excellent food and drink. Another popular local market is the Yamba Farmers and Producers Market which is held every Wednesday from 7am to 11am at Whiting Beach Carpark with high-quality fresh produce and baked goods.
3. Go on the Yuraygir Coastal Walk
Yamba is a walkable town and you can explore the whole town on foot. If you want to get out in nature, the Yuraygir Coastal Walk is a mammoth signposted, multi-day track with incredible views and some of the best of the town on offer. The 65km track is lined with wildflowers, local wildlife, long picturesque beaches, lagoons, and a marine park so nature lovers will have plenty to do. The hike traces the coastline from Angourie to Red Rock, 98km south of Yamba, traversing through the traditional homelands of the Gumbaynggirr and Yaegl nations with serene beachy campgrounds on the way if you’re looking to stay the night. Find the full route on NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.
4. Fill your bags at Yamba’s best boutiques
Like any respectful small town in NSW, Yamba comes with plenty of elegant boutiques and local shops with their own kitschy offerings. Similar to Byron’s hippie, bohemian style, shoppers will find no dearth of local treasures in boutiques and vintage shops around town. Head to the Podium Boutique for women’s clothing, shoes, and accessories or check out One Country Mouse for a curated selection of high-quality brands. Revival Yamba is the place to go for art, surf, and fashion and the Island Collective is an excellent stop for bohemian homewares that perfectly encapsulate the town’s laidback vibe.
5. Catch a film at Yamba Cinema
The Yamba Cinema is a longstanding, family-owned cinema with a single screen and plenty of charm. Watch a cult classic or catch up on the latest release in this local gem which can seat up to 200 people. The old-school cinema is a nostalgic spot with a food kiosk serving classic cinema snacks like chocolate and popcorn, red velvet curtains, and cheap screenings for just $10 per person. It’s a must-visit on a rainy day in the coastal town. See what’s playing here.
6. Try the local dining
Yamba is an underrated food town with a wide range of offerings for people who love to eat. From pizzerias to cosy cafes, seafood restaurants, and upscale eateries, you’ll find everything from lauded hotspots to hidden gems only locals know about. Some recommended spots include the popular Karrikin Yamba which serves seasonal produce, the freshest seafood, and beverages in the heart of Yamba, Sassafras Yamba for pizza, pasta, seafood, delicious cocktails, and a relaxed atmosphere and Brgr Spot for sublime burgers and cold beer. Beachwood Cafe offers excellent coffee along with breakfast and lunch and Cafe Angourie, just 10 minutes down the road is a staunch favourite that locals swear by.
What is the best time to visit Yamba?
Yamba is a year-round destination and best-visited off-season much like Byron Bay. If you’re after warm weather but want to avoid the extreme heat spring and early summer are the best time to visit. Autumn is also a great time to visit with pleasant temperatures and minimal crowds. Winters are typically temperate but can get cold, this season also sees the town at its quietest, with far fewer crowds. Read more about Yamba and find accommodation options here.
