If it’s beaches you want, it’s beaches you shall get, but that is only one among many diverse attractions. Visitors can stroll along ancient rainforest, see the largest ocean blowhole in the world up close, shop for vintage finds at the local markets, or soak up the excellent views from one of the stellar oceanfront restaurants or cafes. Here’s how to make the most of a weekend in Kiama.
1. Check out the famous Kiama ocean blowhole
A visit to Kiama is incomplete without seeing it’s famous ocean blowhole. Said to be the largest in the world, this remarkable natural wonder spouts seawater high into the air as waves crash against the rugged coastline. Delighting visitors for over 100 years, the blowhole can be seen from various vantage points and is a short walk from the station. Picnic and swimming spots are also located nearby so you can pack a picnic and make a day of it. While there, don’t forget to visit the historic Kiama Lighthouse on Blowhole Point. A 10-minute drive will also bring you to the Little Blowhole, where you can catch a quieter but equally impressive display.
Kiama is full of incredible natural wonders. Other must-visit spots include the unusual hexagonal columns of Bombo Headland, formed millions of years ago through volcanic activity and Cathedral Rocks, another one of Kiama’s geological wonders, that rises majestically from the ocean, creating a stunning natural formation.
2. Stroll the stunning Kiama Coast Walk
The Coast Walk in Kiama has long been considered one of Australia’s best coastal walks. Winding past unspoiled ocean views, emerald waters and spectacular rock formations, this is a must-do activity if you’re in the area. The walk is divided into three sections: the northern stretch from Minnamurra River to the Kiama Blowhole, the middle section from Kiama Blowhole to Loves Bay, and the southern stretch from Loves Bay to Gerringong, altogether making a delightful 20km track. You can tackle the entire 6-7 hour one-way journey in a day, or break it up to take in the full splendour of the coastal walk.
3. Shop at the charming local Markets
Kiama’s markets are a treasure trove of local produce, handmade crafts, and unique finds and an excellent way to soak in the relaxed atmosphere of the coastal town while supporting local businesses. Notable markets to check out include the weekly Kiama Farmers’ Markets, held every Wednesday from 3pm to 6pm, the Gerrigong Rotary Markets held on the third Saturday of the month from 8.30am to 1.30pm selling boutique items and high-quality products and the popular Kiama Seaside Markets, the largest in the region, that are set up from 9am to 3pm on the third Sunday of the month, and sell crafts, clothing, food, and more. 4. Explore the national parks and beaches around Kiama
Kiama is conveniently located a short distance from Budderoo National Park, Seven Mile Beach National Park and Barren Grounds Nature Reserve which offer a variety of attractions for nature lovers that range from ancient rainforests, hidden waterfalls with swimming holes, opportunities for fishing and swimming and jaw-dropping views.
As for beaches, the area offers 9 including Kendall’s Beach with gentle sapphire blue waters, perfect for families, Surf Beach which offers world-class waves just a short distance from the main town centre and the sheltered Easts Beach with turquoise waters and golden sands. In close vicinity are the popular Seven Mile Beach in Gerroa and Bombo Beach in Bombo. Kiama also has four ocean pools boasting spectacular sea views and clear waters.

Terralong Street is the main street in Kiama and it’s packed with cafes and restaurants just steps from the water. When is the best time to visit Kiama
There is no bad time to visit Kiama but there are a few things to keep in mind while planning a visit. June, July and August are the busiest months so accommodation rates can be higher than usual. May to November are a great time for whale watching in Kiama while the summer months are excellent for water activities and outdoor adventures. Getting there
Kiama is a short 1.5 to 2 hour drive from Sydney on the brilliant Grand Pacific Drive. It’s also easily accessible via public transport with regular train services from Central to Kiama Station which would take just over 2 hours. It’s also a short 20 minute drive to the lovely town of Berry and about 30 minutes from Wollongong.
