If you’re planning a last-minute escape for the January long weekend but want to avoid packed beaches and bumper-to-bumper traffic, we’ve got a few ideas for you. Skip the likes of Bondi, Byron Bay and Yamba and head to some of the quieter corners within easy reach of Sydney that stay surprisingly under-the-radar this time of year. From laid-back coastal villages to mountain towns and country retreats, these spontaneous getaways are perfect for a short break — and you won’t be jostling for space while you’re there. Here are some of our favourite spots near Sydney.
Bundeena

Tucked inside the Royal National Park and just a short ferry ride from Cronulla, Bundeena is a nature lover’s dream and the perfect summer escape with endless outdoor adventure on offer. Spend your long weekend swimming at Jibbon or Horderns beach, walk the stunning Bundeena Drive to Little Marley Beach section of the famous Coast Track, or explore hidden coves and lookouts in the area. There are also a handful of cafes, a monthly local market and a gelato factory, making it the perfect base for a laidback three-day escape, just a stone’s throw from Sydney.
Kangaroo Valley

Just a short drive from Sydney, Kangaroo Valley offers a winning trifecta of heritage charm, lovely views and stellar food and drink. It’s also a refreshing escape if you want to beat the heat, enveloped by rolling green hills, lush rainforest and waterfalls. Spend your days swimming at Nellies Glen, walk across the historic Hampden Bridge, or go on a scenic drive around town winding past farmland and forest. There are plenty of quaint cottages, boutique stays and wineries around the valley at this low-key but picturesque escape.
Lake Conjola

It may be a slightly longer drive from Sydney than some of the other spots on this list, but Lake Conjola is well worth the extra time on the road. A peaceful alternative to the busier towns around Jervis Bay, the village sits between a sparkling lake, a golden beach and a national park, making it ideal for water lovers. Kayak, paddle and surf on the clear waters of Lake Conjola, go for a scenic walk through Conjola National Park, or soak up the sun on the beach. Back in town, you’ll find breezy cafés, holiday parks and waterfront stays for a relaxing getaway — all without peak season crowds.
Mount Wilson

Mount Wilson might be one of the prettiest autumn escapes in NSW, but its spectacular gardens are also worth a visit in summer. The quiet mountain village is home to several private gardens, including Windyridge Garden, which is open daily year-round, and Bebeah Garden, which also welcomes visitors throughout summer, while others open seasonally or by appointment. Even outside peak foliage season, the leafy streets, heritage homes and cool mountain air make it a beautiful place for a wander — and a much more peaceful alternative to busier Blue Mountains towns like Leura and Katoomba.
Milton

Take a step back in time in the historic village of Milton and explore its heritage streets, old-world shops and quaint galleries dotted along the charming main street. It’s a refreshing change of pace from busier South Coast favourites like Berry and Huskisson, even over the holidays. Milton is also a blossoming foodie town, with stellar bakeries, cafes and some excellent restaurants. If you want to make the most of your long weekend, consider booking one of the heritage guesthouses or cosy cottages dotted around town.
Gerroa

Kiama and Gerringong might be two of the South Coast’s most sought-after summer destinations, but keep driving south to Gerroa if you’re after a quieter alternative. Perched at the northern end of Seven Mile Beach and at the mouth of the Crooked River, this small seaside village is ideal if you want coastal scenery and water adventures without the long-weekend crowds. Gerroa is home to a handful of cafes and relaxed beachside stays, making it an easy pick for a short getaway close to the city.
