When summer arrives, Byron Bay quickly becomes the trending destination everyone’s talking about. This iconic beach town is often hailed as Australia’s ultimate coastal getaway, with golden beaches, sun-kissed boutiques, world-class food and wine, and wild natural beauty. But its popularity comes with the inevitable crowds, as people flock to the coastal mecca in droves from around the country. But if you’re after the same charm and variety, Yamba, further north, is swiftly gaining popularity as the ‘next Byron Bay‘ — offering much of the same allure and diverse offerings, without the overwhelming crowds that flood its famous neighbour. Don’t just take our word for it — pack a bag, grab your sunnies, and hit the road. There’s no better time to visit than summer. Here’s what to see, eat, and do for an action-packed getaway to Yamba.
Things to do in Yamba this summer

There’s no mistaking it — this tranquil spot shares more than a few similarities with its famous counterpart: caramel-toned beaches, whale watching, world-renowned surf breaks, kitchy shops lining the charming main streets, and a thriving cafe culture that is only getting better with time. The difference is a relatively quieter escape for those who’ve grown weary of the more trammelled getaways like Byron.
Since life in Yamba revolves around the beach, kick off your getaway with a day at one of its five beautiful beaches. Head to Main Beach for a refreshing dip in the ocean pool and a bite at the local cafe. If you’re in the mood for a beachside walk, make your way to Pippi Beach, and the natural pool at Angourie is a must-visit. For a slice of solitude, check out Covent Beach or make a beeline to Turners Beach for lively surf and a swim in delightfully warm waters.
Next up, make your way to the Yamba Lighthouse, which has stood tall for over a century. It’s a great spot for history buffs, and perfect for a leisurely picnic or catching glimpses of migrating whales during the warmer months. Keen for an adrenaline rush? Challenge yourself to the 65km Yuraygir Coastal Walk, a stunning journey that stretches all the way to Red Rock, winding past native wildlife, blooming wildflowers, and glittering ocean views.
Other ways to enjoy the town

The key to making the most of your holiday is focusing on what brings you the most joy. If you’re not one for outdoor adventures, there’s plenty to do around town. In addition to ample outdoor adventure and coastal activity, Yamba also boasts a stellar food scene.
When you’ve worked up an appetite, make your way to Gather, perched above Main Beach, for a top-notch brew and a view that’s hard to beat. If you’re in the mood for something new, Split Milk is a recent addition to the cafe scene, serving up smoothies, milkshakes, and all the brunch classics. For a homey vibe, Beachwood Cafe has earned its spot as a local favourite, with fresh produce and a cosy atmosphere. And if you’re in the mood for some excellent baked goods or a selection of cured meats, Bowen’s Delicatessen & Fine Foods is the place to go. For a more refined dining experience, Sandbar offers great cocktails and European-inspired dishes by the beach, while El Ocasa is another stellar Mediterranean bar and restaurant.

One Country Mouse, Flots & Jets, and The Nook are charming local shops for everything from second-hand books to coastal fashion and stylish homewares. But if you want to go where the locals are, mark your calendar for the famous Yamba River Markets held on the fourth Sunday of each month, stacked with food, coffee, clothing, crafts, live music, and good vibes.
Spring and summer bring the best weather for water adventures, sun-soaked walks, and exploring Yamba’s abundant natural beauty, so get planning. Read more about Yamba and find accomodation options here.
