After recently launching a tranquil bamboo walk and a stunning, shell-shaped music venue, Darling Harbour has just brought back a classic Sydney attraction. The popular heritage-listed carousel in Sydney’s harbourside playground, which was closed for the renovation of the surrounding area including the new Imax cinema and W Sydney in 2015 has reopened, only 8 years later. The beautifully restored ride is open to the public and Sydneysiders are now welcome to try the age-old experience again.
Darling Harbour Carousel
You’ll find the carousel shining bright in the heart of Darling Harbour in Palm Grove. The interactive ride with eye-catching fixtures first arrived in Sydney way back in 1897 and was bought by the NSW government in 1988. Interestingly, it’s the second-oldest carousel in Australia, the first one being the Carousel at Melbourne Zoo. Reminiscent of an authentic Edwardian carousel from bygone eras, the ride retains its charming steam engine and much of the original design.
Fitted with vintage cars and wooden horses and covered by a dome canopy with plenty of bright festoon lights and groovy music, the carousel has been delighting locals for over a century. It will be open on weekends and during school holidays and people of all ages can go for a ride for just $7.
