When it comes to the big-screen cinema experience, it doesn’t get bigger and better than IMAX. And some movies certainly deserve the IMAX treatment (read: Top Gun: Maverick). In some good news for Sydney film buffs, after nearly 7 years, IMAX Sydney is ready to reopen, in the same location as the original IMAX, which closed back in 2016. The long-awaited new venue is being touted as IMAX’s “most advanced theatre experience ever.” EVT, the brand behind Event Cinemas is bringing the ambitious new venture to town and they’ve finally revealed a few more details of what’s coming.
The new and improved theatre will be housed at The Ribbon in Darling Harbour with a number of exciting features. Expect a 693-square-metre screen that will deliver crystal-clear, life-like images and precision audio, 430 luxury seats and a 12-channel sound system. Plus an advanced 4K laster projection system with a new optical engine and custom-designed lenses for brighter images, increased resolution and deeper contrast. The new cinema is set to rival others around the world including those from New York, Cannes, and Tokyo.
It will also feature the ‘Your Cinema, Your Way’ seating experience which will give the audience an opportunity to choose from a variety of seating options including full recliners, private pods and couples seating. The location will also come with a food and beverage marketplace complete with your favourite movie-watching snacks.
At the moment, an opening date has not been confirmed but it’s set to open sometime later this year. Keep your eyes on their website for updates.
