Even though it’s been dubbed one of the most luxurious airports in the world, between flight delays, cancellations and general mayhem, Sydney Airport is not the first place you’d want to spend any extra time in. But if you’ve intentionally or unintentionally booked a long layover, there’s no need to fret. There are plenty of fun things to do to make the most of your time without going stir-crazy. Here are some of the best things to do at Sydney Airport.
Do note, that Sydney Airport is not a 24-hour airport and has a strict curfew so you can’t sleep at the airport or stay overnight.
1. Shop for something fabulous
Sydney Airport is home to a variety of excellent shops and brands from around the world. High-end brands include Balenciaga, Cartier, Dior, Gucci and Hermes among others so you can do some serious damage to your credit cards while you wait. You can also pick up some local gifts and souvenirs or duty-free booze if you’re passing through.
2. Enjoy the perks of an airport lounge
If you have a long connecting flight before or ahead of you, take a seat at an airport lounge and order a drink or just relax to get the edge off. The Qantas Lounge, Emirates Airlines Lounge and Centurion Lounge are some lounges available at the international terminal. 3. Get some spa therapy
Nothing says relaxation like a spa treatment. Kickstart your trip even before you get on board the flight and take advantage of the many spa offerings available at the airport including massages, luxurious skin treatments, hot stone massages, body scrubs, aromatherapy and more.
4. Take advantage of the free wifi
Travelling on a budget? Sydney Airport has free wifi across all terminals with fairly good speed and connectivity so you can kick back, relax and spend some hours catching up on your favourite podcast or streaming the latest Netflix series. 5. Try the local food
There are heaps of food options available at the airport and some with plenty of local roots. Get your hands on Mexican food, sushi, pasta and baked goods, or try the coffee at one of the many cafes at the airport if you want a taste of Sydney’s world-famous caffeine.
6. Get some rest
This one is a little tricky because even on safe airports you want to be extra careful about your belongings. There are some budget hotels available within walking distance like Ibis and Mantra. The only hotel conveniently located inside the international terminal (T1) at Sydney Airport which is ideal if you have an early flight and need some shut-eye. 7. Make the most of the general facilities
Aside from free Wifi and comfortable lounges, Sydney Airport has a prayer room if you want to spend some time in a quiet space. Plus, there is an international student welcome desk and a general information desk if you need help navigating the airport or the city. Other facilities include a medical centre and showers in Terminal 1.
