Green spaces have become an increasingly important part of Sydney’s growing suburbs, with new parks, walking trails and playgrounds giving families more reasons to spend time outdoors. Across the city, large recreational precincts are transforming once-empty spaces into destinations for weekend picnics, exercise and family outings. Now, another major public space is set to open in the Hills District, with The Gables Lake Foreshore preparing to welcome visitors this month. Combining lakeside scenery with family-friendly facilities, the new spot is expected to become a popular destination for everything from weekend picnics to afternoon walks and outdoor play. Here’s what you can expect when it opens.
The Gables Lake Foreshore opens this month

At the heart of the precinct is a four-hectare lake, surrounded by boardwalks, walking paths, open green space and a brand-new playground overlooking the water. A new basketball half-court sits alongside the playground, while shared pathways connect the different areas of the foreshore, making it easy to explore on foot, by bike or with a pram. The opening of the foreshore also marks another milestone for the growing Gables community. With this latest addition, there are now five playgrounds spread throughout the suburb, alongside an expanding network of walking paths linking parks and recreational spaces.
Beyond the foreshore, visitors will also find sports fields, basketball courts, a skate park, a climbing structure and a fenced dog park, giving families plenty of options for a longer day out. Located beside Stockland Gables Town Centre, the new precinct is also within easy walking distance of shops, places to eat and more, making it a convenient spot to stop for lunch or a coffee before or after exploring the lake.
Opening celebrations
The Gables Lake Foreshore will officially open with a free community celebration on Sunday, 19 July, featuring live music, children’s entertainment, arts and crafts, face painting and basketball competitions. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic or pick up something from the nearby town centre before settling in for an afternoon by the lake. Find more information here.
