Sydney has welcomed some lovely new walking trails recently, giving locals even more ways to explore the city on foot. From the scenic riverside stretches of the GreenWay walk to the dramatic clifftop views at Hungry Point, there’s been plenty for walkers to discover. Now, another new coastal path has opened on the Northern Beaches, connecting two of Sydney’s most beautiful beachside suburbs. The Newport to Bilgola link is the latest addition to the Northern Beaches Coast Walk, offering a scenic route with turquoise ocean views, elevated boardwalks and picturesque lookouts along the way. If you’re keen for a weekend stroll or exploring more of Sydney’s coastline, here’s what to know about the newly opened coastal trail.
Explore the new Newport to Bilgola coastal walk

The newly completed 750-metre stretch officially opened on October 13, offering a fresh new way to explore this coastal corner of Sydney. Starting near the northern end of Newport Beach, the path runs alongside Barrenjoey Road towards The Serpentine at Bilgola.
One of the highlights is the series of boardwalks built into the landscape, with lookouts along the way where visitors can stop to admire the surrounding scenery. The route also passes through pockets of native vegetation, offering a lovely change of scenery as you make your way between the two beaches. The new path is particularly welcome along this stretch of Barrenjoey Road, where the winding bends and passing traffic have long made travelling on foot less than ideal. Walkers and cyclists now have a dedicated route separated from vehicles, with a wide surface and handrails along parts of the walkway. While the new section is relatively short, exploring the area is now much more convenient.
There have also been improvements to the nearby Bicentennial Path, including a newly paved 200-metre section near Newport Beach and a connection to Eric Green Reserve. Enjoy a summer swim at Newport Beach, with a rock pool at its southern end and plenty of cafés nearby, or continue towards Bilgola Beach, a quieter stretch of sand tucked between the headlands, with one of the city’s prettiest ocean pools.
The Newport to Bilgola link is also part of a much larger project to connect Sydney’s Northern Beaches through a continuous coastal walking route, with further sections planned for the coming years.
