There are plenty of abandoned places in Sydney including the tunnels under Wynyard Station. These lost and forgotten tunnels received a new lease on life courtesy of Vivid Sydney last year with a wild and interactive light show called Dark Spectrum which saw the dilapidated subterranean network transform into a luminous space with installations, robots and pulsating light displays to boot. If you missed out on the immersive experience, we’ve got some good news. Vivid Sydney has now brought back the groovy event for its 2024 edition with a new iteration dubbed Dark Spectrum: A New Journey. Visitors can expect rhythmic lasers and strobe lights, hanging handmade lanterns, music and a lot more in this buzzy show. The tunnels are not usually open to the general public so don’t miss out.
Dark Spectrum, Vivid Sydney 2024
Every year in winter, Vivid Sydney transforms the city into a glowing wonderland with a diverse range of events for everyone. This year the festival has returned with the theme Humanity with a stacked program that analyses the complex traits that define humans through a variety of shows and experiences. Dark Spectrum was a clear highlight last year with an immersive event combining choreographed light displays, music and technology across the 900m of tunnels beneath Wynyard Station.
This year, the event features eight themed chambers, all lit up in a different colour with electronic dance music in the background converting the space into an underground nightclub. Throughout the one-kilometre trail, visitors are surrounded by 300 rhythmic lasers and strobe lights, 500 hanging handmade lanterns, 250 searchlights and 700 illuminated arrows — all hidden beneath the chaotic streets of Sydney’s CBD. As for the music, you can expect some of your favourite tunes from the last 30 years in this exclusive ticketed event.
Dark Spectrum is a collaboration between Vivid Sydney, Sony Music, Mandylights and Culture Creative. It will be held untill Saturday, June 15 and tickets are now on sale. Get yours here to avoid missing out.
