Like other Australian states, NSW is often defined by its icons — from Byron Bay to Bondi and the Blue Mountains. But beyond the well-worn paths, its essence is just as alive in the smaller towns dotted around the state. Offering a more intimate alternative for a weekend getaway, these aesthetic spots offer everything from beautiful 19th-century architecture to sun-soaked eateries, trendy galleries, quaint bakeries and adorable shops — all within a comfortable two-hour radius of the city. If you’re looking to swap the crowds for charming streetscapes and a slower pace, these are some of the cutest small towns around NSW to put on your radar this summer.
1. Berry

Berry is a year-round favourite for Sydneysiders, and for good reason. Effortlessly blending country charm with modern cool, the town is packed with heritage buildings, famous cafes and bakeries, a charming main street and boutique shops, perfect for a spontaneous weekend getaway. A visit usually begins with a hot cinnamon donut at the Famous Berry Donut Van or classic scones at The Berry Tea Shop, followed by a heritage walk through town. If the summer heat is unbearable, you’re only a 10-minute drive from Seven Mile Beach. Plan your trip with our full summer guide to Berry.
2. Berrima

While many travellers flock to the busier streets of Bowral, Berrima offers an equally charming escape — minus the crowds. Widely considered Australia’s best-preserved Georgian village, this 1800s gem offers a step back in time with heritage buildings, stellar cafes, riverside walks and plenty of old-world charm. Start your trip with a baked treat at Baked in Berrima then wander around town past sandstone cottages and heritage buildings. The town is lovely to explore on foot and best enjoyed at a slower pace. Don’t forget to head just out of town to Bendooley Estate to browse their famous book-filled barn with a glass of local cool-climate wine in hand on your visit.
3. Kangaroo Valley

Kangaroo Valley feels worlds away despite being a short drive from Sydney. Enveloped between steep escarpments and rolling green hills, the small village is a tailor-made for nature lovers with scenic lookouts, bushwalks and stunning waterfalls. Home to Australia’s last surviving wooden suspension bridge, the historic Hampden Bridge, the town also boasts a charming main strip with a handful of cafes, pubs and local shops paired with scenic views. Kick off the day with a paddle down the Kangaroo River, explore the heritage buildings at the Pioneer Village Museum or take a short drive to Fitzroy Falls and see the water drop into the rainforest.
4. Leura

Leura is one of the cutest small towns in the Blue Mountains and easily accessible from Sydney. Touted as the ‘Garden Village,’ it’s a town of Edwardian-era architecture, cafes, bookshops and bakeries — most independently run and manicured cool-climate gardens well worth a visit in any season. Start your morning at Sorensen’s Glasshouse, a stunning cafe set around a leafy glass building, grab an artisan treat at Josophan’s Fine Chocolates, check out over 5,500 teapots at the quirky Bygone Beautys Treasured Teapot Museum wander the grounds of Everglades House & Gardens, or pack a picnic and head to the Leura Cascades and and its hidden swimming holes.
5. Gerringong

Although somewhat overshadowed by nearby Kiama, Gerringong offers an equally charming alternative to its busier neighbour, with the same coastal scenery and waterside fun with perhaps the prettiest clifftop views in the region. Spend your morning browsing the main street’s vibrant homeware stores and surf shops before heading down to Werri Beach for a swim. For more fun in the water, the nearby Ourie Pool is one of the most scenic rock pools on the coast. If you’re keen to get active, tackle a section of the Kiama Coast Walk or plan a visit to the local estate vineyards for a glass of wine and sprawling views. See the full guide to Gerringong here.
