Despite its postcard-perfect setting in the heart of the Shoalhaven region and proximity to Sydney, Kangaroo Valley remains blissfully under the radar. But this vastly underrated village offers countless reasons to visit, even more so in the cooler months. Enveloped in foggy landscapes and framed by idyllic rolling hills, this unassuming corner of NSW is about as picturesque as it gets. Come winter, it offers no shortage of cold-weather fun, from vintage museums and national parks to cosy bakeries and fireside cafes. If you’re looking for an affordable winter getaway without the stress of planning and long travel, put this quaint little spot at the top of your list. Here’s where to stay warm, eat well, and make the most of winter in Kangaroo Valley.
Things to do in Kangaroo Valley this winter

Winter in Kangaroo Valley is moderately chilly, but not so cold you’ll want to curl up and hibernate all day. It’s the perfect time for bushwalks, winery visits, and cosy evenings by a crackling fire. Even better, with plenty of off-season deals on the cards, you can enjoy all this and more, without stretching your budget.
The seasonal adventures are endless — start your day with a stroll across the Historic Hampden Bridge, Australia’s last surviving wooden suspension bridge and a photographer’s delight. You can also snag the best views of the Kangaroo River from the heritage-listed bridge. If you can’t stay away from the water, rain or shine, the river is the place to be with opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, and soaking up the wild, natural beauty all around.
Other outdoor activities to add to your itinerary include a drive to Cambewarra Mountain Lookout, where you’ll get wide-open views over the Shoalhaven. If you’ve got time, head out to Morton National Park and follow the track to Fitzroy Falls, a stunning 81-metre cascade that drops into dense bushland. It’s well worth the detour and even prettier after a day of seasonal rainfall.

Wondering where to eat while you’re in town? A wander down the main street reveals plenty of country charm, with old buildings, vintage shops and cosy cafés to hunker down in. Stop by Maddison’s In The Valley for quality coffee and wholesome breakfast or lunch, or try The General Cafe for seasonal, nutritious food. Don’t miss The Friendly Inn, where you can enjoy a pet-friendly beer garden and tuck into seafood, steaks, schnitzels, and a wide range of beers and wines. The Kangaroo Valley Bakehouse is a must-visit local favourite for freshly baked goods, and if you’ve got a sweet tooth, don’t miss Valley Fudge & Teahouse for creamy ice cream and gooey fudge, or pop into Sweet As Kangaroo Valley for classic lollies and sugary treats.
What else can you do?

Amazing as the outdoors may be, if you’d rather stay out of the cold, there’s plenty to do around town. The Pioneer Village Museum makes for an enjoyable day out for the young and old alike, with artefacts and buildings from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. For a taste of local life, time your visit with the Kangaroo Valley Farmers Markets, held on the second Sunday of each month with homemade goodies, hot food, and plenty of small-town charm.
Kangaroo Valley is also known for its incredible wines. For a taste, make your way to Yarrawa Estate for wine tasting, cheese platters, and seasonal farm produce. While you’re out that way, swing by Kangaroo Valley Olives to sample their locally grown olives and pick up a bottle of rich olive oil.
