There’s something about autumn in the Blue Mountains that always draws a crowd, from the waterfalls and walking trails of the most popular National Park in the state to the leafy streets of its quaint small towns. For most, this season is synonymous with a pilgrimage to Mount Wilson to wander its famous heritage gardens and golden avenues. However, this year’s plans have hit a roadblock — literally. With Mount Wilson Road currently closed to the public, the region’s most iconic leaf-peeping spot is off the table for now.
The good news is that one of the prettiest spots in the mountains is still wide open. Tucked away in Blackheath just a stone’s throw from the city is Wentworth Street — a stunning stretch of 1930s liquidambars that put on a masterclass in seasonal colour every autumn. Ready to plan your detour? Here is everything you need to know before you head out.
Wentworth Street, Blackheath

Wentworth Street is widely considered one of the most photogenic at this time of year. The street is lined with a majestic stand of liquidambars that date back to the 1930s, creating a lush, arched canopy that effectively turns the road into a dazzling tunnel of red and yellow. By late April, the street is typically buried under a colourful carpet of leaves, offering that quintessential autumn aesthetic just a short stroll from the village centre.
As part of an ongoing council-led restoration and maintenance program, the trees are carefully managed to preserve the streetscape allowing visitors to walk through drifts of crimson and gold in peak autumn.
Things to do in Blackheath
Beyond the autumn foliage, Blackheath has plenty to offer for a perfect day trip. Pick up an eclectic find at Victory Theatre Antique Centre, or grab a coffee at Roasters With Altitude or Sanguinary before hitting the trails. For outdoor adventure, the famous Grand Canyon Track takes you through lush ferns and slot canyons, while Govetts Leap offers incredible valley views. If the crowds on the main street get a bit much, head over to the Campbell Rhododendron Gardens for exotic flowers and delicious scones. Plan your trip with our autumn guide to Blackheath.
