Autumn has arrived and travellers are already dreaming of crisp, vibrant leaves, cosy sweaters, dreamy hiking trails and spiced drinks. But with fuel prices on the rise across Australia, planning a long road trip isn’t ideal right now. The good news is you don’t need to go far — or even drive — to experience the magic of the season. Just a stone’s throw from Sydney, the Southern Highlands is easily accessible by train, if you’re keen to swap the city for cooler temperatures and changing foliage over the Easter long weekend. Among the most gorgeous of towns in the area is Bowral, a well-loved country escape that comes into its own in autumn, with charming tree-lined streets doused in bright crimson and golden hues, alongside quaint cafes and manicured gardens perfect for exploring this season. Here’s how to make the most of an autumn trip to Bowral.
Things to do in Bowral this autumn

Autumn in the Southern Highlands is particularly rewarding, with surrounding vineyards and wineries cloaked in rich shades of red, orange and gold, outdoor adventures and plenty of cosy spots to refuel with coffee and baked treats between outings. To immerse yourself in the season, start your trip with a wander through Corbett Gardens, best known for its spring displays but equally lovely for a autumnal stroll and picnic. From there, head to the nearby Lake Alexandra, for a flat walking loop that circles the water framed by native bush and deciduous trees, with plenty of quiet corners to stop, sit and take in the view.
If you’re up for something more outdoorsy, Bowral also makes a great base for leaf-peeping walks and scenic drives through the Highlands. Fitzroy Falls is well worth the short drive, with the waterfall dropping dramatically into the valley below and lookouts offering wide views across Morton National Park. The surrounding areas offer plenty of walking trails, ideal for exploration in the cooler weather and picnic areas tucked into the bush.

If you don’t want to stray too far from town, there’s plenty to do in the town itself. With an easy-to-navigate layout, a charming main street and a quaint downtown filled with shops, cafes and galleries, it’s a great place to visit year round. On Bong Bong street, the main street in town you’ll find long-standing spots like the Bradman Museum, which pays tribute to Australia’s most celebrated cricketer with a detailed collection of memorabilia and exhibits. Also well worth a visit is Dirty Janes, a sprawling indoor market packed with vintage furniture, homewares and collectables.
Not far from here, The Milk Factory Gallery is set inside a converted old dairy in a historic building and is worth a quick browse if you’re into local art. For more shopping, The Bronte Tram — housed in a restored tram depot — is perfect for vintage lovers, combining antiques, homewares and a low-key cafe on-site.
Other ways to enjoy the town

When the autumn air turns crisp, Bowral’s stellar dining scene becomes an invitation to slow down and linger. Start your morning with something warm from the famous Gumnut Patisserie, known for its pies and pastries, swing by Allumer for a second cup of coffee, or head to The Press Shop for a relaxed brunch using fresh local produce. Hearth by Moonacres is another cosy option for coffee and pastries, complete with a fireplace for cooler days, while Onesta Cucina offers a refined yet welcoming setting and excellent handmade pasta. Ethos Restaurant is another local favourite, known for its fine dining and well-crafted cocktails.
For a truly autumnal experience, a short drive out of town leads to Centennial Vineyards, where tastings come with views over vines shifting through vibrant seasonal colour.
If you’re around on the fourth Saturday of the month, the New Bowral School Market is well worth a visit, with stalls selling fresh produce, baked goods and handmade items. It’s also a good excuse to pick up a local souvenir before heading home. Read more about Bowral and find accomodation options here.
