From country towns to ancient rainforests, there’s always something exciting to explore in our own backyard. But if you’re struggling to decide where to go, a new study by Bounce has ranked Australia’s best-hidden gems and 2 of them are right here in NSW. The perennially favourite Lord Howe Island was ranked the second-best hidden gem in all of Australia while the breezy, surf town of Yamba made it to the list at number 5.
The top 10 hidden gems in Australia
When it comes to idyllic vacation spots, Lord Howe Island needs no introduction. One of over 8,000 islands in Australia, this scenic gem stands out for its extraordinary beauty, World Heritage-listed surroundings, and some of the most stunning walking trails in the world. It is also home to many jaw-dropping natural wonders including the world’s tallest sea stack, the world’s southernmost coral reef and the spectacular Mount Gower that soars high above the grounds and waves below. It’s also a haven for water lovers with options for snorkelling, diving, swimming, and much more. The oceanic island of volcanic origin is also as exclusive as it gets with a population of 382 people (2016 census) and only 400 visitors allowed at any one time to preserve the ecosystem including its rare endemic species like the Lord Howe Island Stick Insect, which was previously considered extinct for a century.
This gorgeous little island paradise was topped by the Queensland city of Toowoomba, famous for its street art, country charm, and spring flowers.
The far more understated Yamba is a laidback coastal town in the NSW North Coast which is increasingly giving Byron Bay a run for its money. Pristine beaches, charming local boutiques, and underwater activities await in this small but mighty spot. You can plan your getaway to Yamba here.
