Visit A City Sanctuary In An Inner City Suburb • The Grounds Of Alexandria

The Grounds of Alexandria has become a city sanctuary for coffee fiends, brunch addicts, and garden lovers.

If you’re in the mood for good food and good coffee as well as good times and great photos all in the one place, then a visit to The Grounds of Alexandria is a must. (Featured image: The Grounds of Alexandria)

Located in what was once a Four’N Twenty pie factory, visitors will now find a coffee roastery, a cafe, a bar, a garden, a farm and, if you come on the weekend, a market as well as all kinds of workshops or events.

And this is all before they transform The Grounds into a wonderful wonderland of light and colour that blows you away with its style, detail, and creativity. It’s no wonder that The Grounds has been helping people create many magical memories with friends and family. (After all, it is one of the most Instagrammed places in Australia as evidenced by all the geotagged photos.)

But first, coffee.

From purchasing green beans across the world to doing their own roasting, the team at The Grounds proudly produces their own seasonal blends or spectacular single origins to use in their own cafe as well as across many others in Sydney. They thank their Loring s70 roaster for its ‘uncanny ability to squeeze every last drop of flavour’ from the beans but something tells us that it’s their experience, dedication and philosophy behind coffee and what they do that consistently sees a balanced drop.

If you are keen to know more about the coffee you drink, be sure to attend one of The Grounds Coffee Cupping Sessions and participate in the full-sensory experience that is drinking coffee – fragrance, aroma, break, brightness, mouth-feel and flavour.

The Cafe

The coffee at The Grounds Cafe is served by specially-trained baristas knowledgable in the Seasonal Blend, Single Origins, and weekly offerings of fresh roasts from around the world. But the food? The food is everything you expect from an Australian cafe. Seasonally inspired, fresh ingredients, crisp colours and plated strategically – the food is quality.

A read through the menu and you take note of the number of elements used to spoil your taste buds: house-made cultured butter; rhubarb, orange and almond…; pomegranate; green chilli and feta; strawberry and nectarine with mascarpone…; roast eggplant, labneh, chilli oil.

Then you’ve got freshly-squeezed juices, smoothies and shakes. And that’s just breakfast. The Cafe also does lunch. And they also bake their own bread, which can be seen from the cafe itself as the open-plan kitchen allows guests to see the processes behind the exquisite selection of sourdoughs and pastries being made.

Taste something you love? Check the retail area to see if it’s one of the many products you can take home with you.

The Potting Shed

This is the place where you go to lounge long into the evening beneath an abundance of hanging plants.

Drink craft beers, sample great-tasting wines, and sip on cocktails decorated with lush florals while you chat with friends and family. Once you’re hungry, select shared plates from the menu or the substantial three-course meal option because once you’re comfortably seated, it might be some time before you get back up again.

To help round out the end of the week and ring-in the weekend, The Potting Shed plays host to live music from 6:30pm every Friday.

The Garden

Open for breakfast and lunch (outdoor bbq and wood-fired pizza), The Garden is the place where you don’t know where to look first. And then second. And then third. It’s decked out and draped with grapevines, florals, vegetables, herbs and greenery not to mention that it’s constantly evolving.

There is an arbour laced with bougainvilleas and lights, a charming glasshouse, and an animal farm; home to resident pig, Harry Trotter, and his animal-farm friends.

There is also an outdoor barbie firing burgers, two Italian wood-fire ovens for pizza on the weekends and a selection of beers, wines and cocktails for the big kids to enjoy. A selection of juices, smoothies and shakes help the little ones recoup their energy after playing in the dedicated kids play zone.

Mums, dads and adults alike can take to the market every Saturday and Sunday to peruse the makers, creators and producers that set up shop at The Grounds. See them here and get a head start on getting what you want.

There’s just so much more to explore at The Grounds of Alexandria that really the best thing to do is go there for yourself and experience the quality of their food, the philosophy behind their coffee, and the beauty of their spaces.

Just take a look at some of their past wonderlands and tell me you’re not left in awe.
