Instagram sensation and the source of countless brunch dates and birthday bookings, The Grounds of Alexandria is getting a new sibling in town. The much-loved hospitality group has announced plans to open a new venue inside the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, taking over the historic Domain Gateway precinct right on the edge of the gardens. Known for their immersive dining experiences, this latest project from The Grounds Group is set to introduce hospitality into an area of the city that has largely remained off-limits to the public for nearly two centuries. Here’s what we know.
The Grounds in the Domain
The new venue, dubbed The Grounds in the Domain, will be located within the 190-year-old Domain Gateway precinct, a heritage-listed area near landmarks including the Art Gallery of NSW and St Mary’s Cathedral. The area includes a collection of historic buildings, including the sandstone Domain Lodge, and will be opening up its doors to visitors for the first time. The project follows a long-term agreement with Botanic Gardens of Sydney, with plans to revitalise the overlooked space and bring it back into public use, while preserving its heritage features as part of the redevelopment.
Early details point to a lush garden-setting that leans into the site’s rich history. Founder and Director of The Grounds Group Ramzey Choker said the project presents “a rare opportunity to welcome the public back into one of Sydney’s most historically significant locations.”
Curious what the new venue might be like? Expect garden-side dining, with seasonal, locally sourced food on the menu, and ample indoor and outdoor seating — an idyllic stop for a drink or meal between walks through the gardens or visits to nearby exhibitions.
Works are scheduled to begin in 2026, we’ll keep you updated with more details closer to the launch. Keep an eye on their website for updates.
