Australia’s love for big things is never-ending — giant potatoes, massive sheep, even a big banana, because why not. But did you know Sydney has its own version of a ‘big thing’? Well, sort of. It’s the Harbour Bridge — just a tad bit smaller. Mini replicas of the iconic arch are scattered all over the city, right under our noses. From iron fences to creatively trimmed hedges, these hidden gems are not only a fun nod to the Harbour Bridge, but also carry some historical significance. Next time you’re out and about in Sydney, keep an eye out for these mini Harbour Bridges scattered throughout the city. (No, unlike the actual Harbour Bridge, you can’t climb these.) Here’s where to find them.
Sydney’s mini Harbour Bridges
One mini bridge to start with can be found in Lilyfield’s Callan Park, and this one is particularly interesting because it was built even before the Harbour Bridge was completed. This miniature version of the bridge was designed by Douglas Grant, a former Indigenous soldier, as a tribute to his fallen comrades. You can find the scale model sitting above a circular wishing well. Find more information about it here.
Then there’s the locally loved mini Harbour Bridge at Warwick Farm. Spanning an impressive 60 meters, it’s claimed to be one of the biggest roadside attractions in Australia. Despite that, it remains surprisingly under the radar.
This mini bridge popped up in 1988 to coincide with the launch of the new Ford Falcon wagons — that’s one way to promote a car dealership. In contrast to the one in Callan Park, this quirky bridge has become a well-known landmark in south-west Sydney. (The internet will tell you the Warwick Farm Bridge was the inspiration for the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle, UK, but don’t buy it.)
And there’s more! Tucked away in South Western Sydney is the East Hills Footbridge — a sleek steel structure connecting the suburbs of East Hills and Voyager Point. While it’s much smaller, its signature arch mirrors that of the Harbour Bridge.
