Don’t Tell Aunty is likely one of your regular haunts in Sydney if you enjoy Indian cuisine. From Bollywood movies projected on the walls to rich peacock blues adorning the venue, it’s an excellent taste of the subcontinent’s rich culture. Restauranteur and chef Jessi Singh is now bringing a new restaurant to town with a similar formula – delicious Indian food, Indian-inflected drinks and seriously colourful interiors. Christened Pinky Ji, guests can expect a true feast for the senses with a wholesome menu, moody neon lighting, red velvet furnishings and some filmy glam to boot.
Pinky Ji, Sydney
Alive with flavour, spices and colour, India’s burgeoning food culture has a lot to offer. Encapsulating that spirit, Pinky Ji will serve up Indian dishes with a modern twist, but without straying too far from its roots.
“Pinky-Ji is the younger, sassier and more independent version of our much-loved daughter-in-law. The menu in our new venue will bring all of the fun and unauthentic food that Daughter-in-Law is synonymous with to Sydney with a slightly more elevated twist.” Jessi said.
The menu is curated by Jessi and former Chin Chin head chef Johann Jay and features a few key sections: snacks, raw, street, grill, wok, tandoor and curry along with bread, sides and drinks.
Mumbai Corn, accompanied by chilli lime yoghurt, crab curry croqueta, BBQ paneer tikka, and coconut curry are just some of the many delicacies on offer. Classics like ‘unauthentic’ butter chicken, creamy lamb rogan ghosh and dhal will also make an appearance. There’s also delicious cocktails in the mix and help-yourself craft beer fridges.
Equally exciting are its bold interiors with all the colourful and ethnic trimmings. There’s also a private dining room with a karaoke machine pumping out nostalgic 70s, 80s and 90s tunes.
The buzzy spot will also serve up $20 thalis for weekday lunches if you’re after a quick bite and brunch yum cha on weekends.
Pinky-Ji is Singh’s second Sydney restaurant aside from sister venue Don’t Tell Aunty. He has also opened restaurants across Melbourne, Adelaide and Byron Bay with more projects in the pipeline.
