Pop quiz: what’s the first dish that comes to mind when you think about KFC? Given its name, we’re going to take a stab and say most of y’all went with the eponymous fried chicken. But, despite other fast-food chains laying claim to their burgers being better, KFC kitchens have been quietly churning out their own top-tier crispy chicken burgs for years.
And now, the people who brought us probably the world’s most closely guarded herbs-and-spices recipe (not to mention a cracking selection of sides) are getting ready to unveil an all-new permanent addition to menus around the country. The Original Crispy Burger Series takes three classic KFC burgers – original recipe, cheese and bacon, and the classic stacker – but elevates them with double-breaded chicken for the ultimate crunchy munch.
To celebrate the release of the new range, the colonel and co. will open a world-first pop-up called The Original Crispery in Sydney this weekend, where they’ll be slinging an eclectic range of non-KFC foods cooked in the new double-breading method to truly test the limits of what can be crispified.
From a fluffy cheesecake to green chips (bet you never thought you’d see broccolini and asparagus on a KFC menu, huh?) and even a reimagined PB&J sandwich, poultry peeps who head down to the Crown Street, Darlinghurst pop-up from 10am on Friday, 17 May and Saturday, 18 May will be able to test KFC’s approach to the theory ‘dust yourself off any fry again’ with a free original recipe burger and their choice of one additional crispified item for free.
If there ever was finger lickin’ good way to spend a weekend, then this might be it.
Find The Original Crispery at 118 Crown Street, Darlinghurst. It’s open from 10am–7pm on Friday, May 17, and from 10am–5pm on Saturday, May 18.
