NSW may bring to mind white sand beaches or tropical escapes. Or you may think of ancient natural wonders, wild swimming spots, and world-class hikes. Among these stellar landscapes, are a relatively under-the-radar gem — waterfalls. From spectacularly high cascades to picturesque spots with private plunge pools, there are plenty of excellent falls within easy reach of the city that are perfect to visit no matter the season. One such place is Belmore Falls, easily one of NSW’s most popular and most beautiful waterfalls. The two-tiered waterfall is nestled in the Southern Highlands and drops dramatically over the Illawarra escarpment into Kangaroo Valley enveloped in a verdant environment. Take a break and head out of the city to relax and unwind at this refreshing spot.
Belmore Falls, Robertson
The photogenic falls can be reached on a walking track near Kangaroo Valley and can be experienced from a few different vantage points. The 1.8km return walk is short and can be completed within 30 minutes to an hour depending on fitness level but lacking in spectacle and scenery, it definitely isn’t.
You can start the walk at Hindmarsh Lookout carpark which offers gorgeous views of the valley and beyond and follow the signs around the escarpment to reach the three lookouts in the area, with the last one treating visitors to views of Belmore Falls. There is parking available at Hindmarsh lookout point for free. Unfortunately, there is no access to the base of Belmore Falls, nor can you swim at the top but the drive up is worth it for the local flora, magnificent views, and the meandering 750-metre walking trail to the falls. NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service advises against trying to reach the bottom of the falls as this is too risky. Read more about Belmore Falls here.
