Everyone needs a little peace and quiet from time to time and lucky for us there are plenty of tranquil places for a peaceful retreat within a short distance of Sydney. The laidback charms of Berry, the gold-rush heritage of Sofala and the old-world allure of Berrima draw thousands of visitors each year for a relaxing trip away from the city. Right up there with the very best is Kangaroo Valley which combines splendid wilderness with a touch of pampering. Sandwiched between the Southern Highlands and the NSW South Coast, this small town offers an abundance of nature and history to city dwellers. It is said to be one of only seven enclosed valleys in the world so you’ll find yourself surrounded by mountain views and lush farmland. Here is everything you need to do on a weekend trip to Kangaroo Valley.
Kangaroo Valley
This year-round destination has something for every type of traveller but ones with a penchant for the outdoors will find it particularly appealing. This picturesque spot rests amidst hills, rainforests, stunning waterfalls and a river that runs through the valley. Though small, Kangaroo Valley offers plenty of opportunities for bushwalking, wild swimming and kayaking. Although it doesn’t get mentioned in the same vein as the Hunter Valley and Mudgee, it is secretly home to some excellent wineries.
Things to do
If you’re planning a weekend getaway, start your day at one of its cosy eateries which include the Kangaroo Valley Bakehouse, famous for its divine pies, pastries and breads, or make your way to Hampden Deli where you can lounge around with a glass of wine, settle in with a book or try its famous coffee. The General Cafe is another laidback eatery serving wholesome meals and a seasonal menu.
If you’re looking to get out and about amongst nature, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Kangaroo Valley. The best way to get into the heart of the valley and explore it up close is by kayak or canoe. Kangaroo Valley Safaris and Kangaroo Valley Kayaks run tours through glorious natural scenery, rainforests and abundant wildlife. If you’d rather stay on land, Morton National Park and Kangaroo Valley Nature Reserve offer plenty of bushwalking trails and the park is also home to the stunning Fitzroy Falls, which plunges 80m to the valley below. Hit the West Rim Walking Track for waterfall views, a lush rainforest setting and plenty of native flora.
A must-do in the area is visiting the Hampden Bridge — Australia’s last surviving wooden suspension bridge. This splendid attraction in Kangaroo Valley resembles the entrance to an ancient castle with Victorian sandstone towers. It’s located close to Fitzroy Falls and you can opt to take a self-guided tour of the bridge, visit the Pioneer Village Museum or pack a picnic and head to the Hampden Bridge Park.
