Waterfalls are one of NSW’s most mystical natural wonders. Although there are plenty of cascades to see in and around the state, there’s no denying some are more enchanting than others. While some might be revered for their enticing swimming holes, others hide sparkly secrets after dark, but none are quite as grand as Ellenborough Falls. Why? It is not only the tallest single-drop waterfall in New South Wales but also amongst the tallest in the southern hemisphere. So needless to say it presents a jaw-dropping sight and is worth the long drive out from Sydney to see at close quarters. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
Ellenborough Falls, NSW
The falls are surrounded by a stunning gorge and the two combined are reason enough to plan a weekend trip. Located in the Manning Valley region on the Barrington Coast, there are four different lookouts where you can experience the falls. Two of these are close to the car park and both can be reached without much difficulty. If you’d prefer getting close to the falls, there is a third option — a 10-minute walk that will lead you to a viewing platform directly opposite the falls.
But there is another option still that will lead you straight to the waterfall if you’re prepared to climb 641 stairs but the views are well worth the effort as is the refreshing “waterfall shower” once you get to the base. There is also a picturesque rockpool at the very bottom. Do note that the steps are narrow and can be slippery on a wet day. Equally lovely is the lush bushland surrounding the waterfalls with tall gum trees, native foliage and misty rainforest views. On a rainy day, the falls are thunderous and majestic and the drive there is just as scenic but watch out for dirt roads and road works.
Can you swim in Ellenborough Falls?
There is a small swimming hole at the bottom of the falls but there are a few things to keep in mind. The rocks at the base of the falls can be very slippery so you’ll need to be extra careful here and the water can also be powerful after rains so swimming is advised for seasoned swimmers. There is also a pool above the falls but it is not advised to swim there. Also, be warned that the water is said to be quite cold both during the cooler and warmer months.
