There’s hardly a better pastime than sinking into a steamy, mineral-rich bath, especially in the depths of winter. There’s no shortage of bathhouses in and around Sydney to soak away your aches and worries, from the sleek new Soak Bathhouse to the long-loved Japanese Bathhouse tucked away in the Blue Mountains. Now there’s a new name in the mix, bringing even more relaxation to the region. Aqua Ignis has just opened in Blackheath, on Gundungurra and Dharug country, blending global bathing traditions in a tranquil new space. Think onsen-style baths, herbal steam rooms, magnesium mineral baths, and more. Here’s everything you need to know about the new wellness retreat, and why it’s well worth the weekend drive.
Aqua Ignis, Blackheath
This new bathhouse brings together hot and cold therapies in a space that feels both modern and deeply connected to its serene surroundings, with a little something for everyone. Aqua Ignis means water and fire, a reference to the core elements behind any bathhouse experience.
Housed in a thoughtfully restored heritage site, Aqua Ignis offers a quiet retreat from the outside world. The bathhouse was shaped around a ‘room within a room‘ concept by co-founders Taku Kjelgaard and Lee Nias, who both grew up in the Blue Mountains. The space blends traditional Eastern bathing with contemporary wellness practices, offering a slower pace, rooted in ritual, designed to help you reset, both body and mind.
“Until now, there hasn’t been anything quite like this in the Blue Mountains,” said Taku. “We wanted to create something rooted in the joy and soul of traditional bathing culture — yet designed for the pace and pressure of modern life. This is a space to exhale, to be still, and to reconnect to the body and spirit.”
What to expect
Guests can look forward to a 38-degree magnesium bath inspired by Japanese onsen, a herbal steam room, a hot rock sauna, and icy plunge pools, plus plenty of quiet spots to unwind in this thoughtfully designed space.
Guests can choose from self-guided 90-minute bathing sessions, silent “Seijaku” sessions, or follow one of the two signature circuits — Yin Flow for slow, restorative bathing, or Yang Flow for more energising contrast therapy. Memberships for locals, seasonal passes, and small wellness events are also on the way in the coming months.
It’s another reason to head to the Blue Mountains, beyond its many walking trails, quaint towns, and national parks. Bookings are now open, with sessions available Tuesday to Thursday from 10am to 8.30pm, and Friday to Sunday from 8am to 8pm. Snag a spot here.
