The Blue Mountains is a go-to spot for Sydneysiders looking to quieten the din of daily life in the city. But did you know that Lithgow has a traditional Japanese onsen nestled deep in the countryside? Situated on the slopes overlooking Lake Lyell, this idyllic Japanese bath house and spa is the place to go if you’re due for some R&R. On offer are a number of relaxing hot baths that use natural mineral water drawn from underground springs flowing from a depth of about 300 meters from the land. Although you’ll find a number of hot springs dotted across NSW, this is the only Japanese onsen in the state where you can get a true taste of Japanese spa culture at home.

The serene vibe of the bathhouse is echoed in its beautiful natural setting that comes complete with a lovely rose garden and a Japanese Zen Garden that will transport you straight to Japan. There’s also a stunning red Japanese Gateway for all your Instagram needs.
Guests enter the onsen by wading through beautifully blue, ankle deep water — a little taste of the all-natural detox that awaits at the venue.
You’ll find multiple bathing areas including private buros, a herbal steam room, individual soaking tubs and outdoor hot pools. There’s also a massage room, a restroom and options to stay in traditional Japanese accommodations overnight if you’re keen to make a weekend trip out of it. The pools are spread across the Zen Garden with striking views over Lake Lyell.
