One of inner Sydney’s oldest sporting venues is about to enter a new era, with plans confirmed to transform Wentworth Park into a major community recreation precinct. Long associated with greyhound racing, the historic site will soon begin the transition towards public sporting fields and expanded green spaces, transforming a prominent part of the city for future generations. The project forms part of a broader vision for the fast-evolving Pyrmont and Ultimo precinct, with thousands of new homes, improved public spaces and upgraded transport connections planned over the coming years. Here’s everything you need to know.
What’s planned for Wentworth Park
Greyhound racing at Wentworth Park will come to an end in October 2026, bringing nearly a century of racing at the venue to a close. Following the final race meeting, work will begin to prepare the site for its next chapter, including removing existing racing facilities before the land is handed over to the City of Sydney. Once complete, the former racetrack will become multipurpose sporting fields and public open space, extending the surrounding parklands and creating more room for organised sport, recreation and daily use.
The transformation will increase the size of Wentworth Park by incorporating the former 3.9-hectare racing site into the existing public reserve, creating an expanded 14-hectare park for the local community. The larger footprint is expected to accommodate a mix of sporting fields and green areas, providing additional room for recreation in one of Sydney’s fastest-growing inner-city precincts.
What happens next
The NSW Government says early preparation works are expected to begin before the end of the year, allowing redevelopment of the site to get underway soon. Greyhound racing will relocate to other tracks across NSW following the closure, with the state government committing $10 million towards upgrades through the Greyhound Capital Grants Program. The funding will help participating venues meet track standards as the sport transitions away from Wentworth Park.
