Now, one of its busiest waterfront hubs has received a major upgrade, with a brand new public wharf opening at Belmont. Designed to improve access for recreational and commercial vessels while making it easier to enjoy the foreshore, the new addition is set to benefit both locals and visitors exploring the lake.
What’s new at Belmont Wharf
Replacing a timber wharf that had served the community for around 50 years, the new Belmont Wharf stretches 71 metres in length and is both longer and wider than the previous structure, providing more space for recreational and commercial vessels to pull alongside. A new concrete connection also links the wharf directly to the existing foreshore pathway, making access between the waterfront and surrounding area easier. The upgrade also includes a new marine waste pump-out facility, giving boat owners a dedicated place to dispose of waste while helping protect the water quality of Lake Macquarie.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said the new wharf would benefit not only the local boating community but also visitors exploring the region. “This new wharf will serve the boating community, as well as locals and visitors, for many years to come, offering a purpose-built place to enjoy the lake and take in the spectacular scenery,” he said.
More than 20,000 vessels are registered across the Lake Macquarie area, making it one of the busiest recreational boating destinations in NSW. The larger wharf provides additional space for boats to dock temporarily, improving access for people heading ashore while easing congestion at the popular waterfront. Built with reinforced concrete supports, steel piles and marine-grade fittings, the new structure has also been designed to withstand the demands of the busy marine environment and serve the community for decades to come.

Belmont is one of the best places to experience the wonders of Lake Macquarie. The suburb is a popular launching point for boating, sailing and kayaking, while nearby Belmont Baths offers a calm swimming spot with scenic views over the lake. Visitors can also walk or cycle along the waterfront, relax at one of the lakeside parks or stop for a meal at one of the area’s waterside cafes and restaurants after a day on the water.

Belmont is located on the eastern shores of Lake Macquarie, around a 2-hour drive from Sydney via the M1 Pacific Motorway. It’s about 20 minutes from Newcastle and is accessible by public transport, with regular trains to Newcastle Interchange connecting to local bus services to Belmont.
