NSW is home to some pretty unique natural wonders, from the bioluminescent waters on the south coast to the ancient limestone caves, just a stone’s throw from Sydney. But you don’t have to leave the city to find a spot with an equally cool trick up its sleeve. Tucked along one of Sydney’s most walked coastal trails is a small harbour beach that appears and disappears at the whims of the ocean. An easy spot to overlook, even if you’ve walked the trail a dozen times, the appropriately named Washaway Beach is one of the city’s best-kept secrets. After a high tide or heavy swell, the sand is often washed away, leaving only rock slabs behind. If you’re looking for an off-the-grid adventure this summer, here’s what you need to know about Washaway Beach.
Washaway Beach

Sitting at the base of sandstone cliffs beneath Grotto Point at Dobroyd Head, the beach is a 200-metre stretch of sand with picturesque views across the water to Balmoral and the Manly ferries. Surrounded by dense bushland, the beach is wild and secluded, rarely drawing more than a handful of visitors at a time. So if you’re keen to get away from the tourist-heavy areas around Manly, this beach offers a quieter alternative.
Along the track down to the shore, keep an eye out for well-preserved Aboriginal rock engravings. Whether the sand is there or not, the flat rock shelves are a great spot for sunbathing and swimming in the calm, clear waters, with incredible views to boot. It’s worth noting that the beach is not patrolled and remains clothing-optional. Access also involves a short rocky scramble or climb down from the main track, so it’s worth assessing conditions and your comfort level before heading down. Don’t forget to check the tide and swell conditions before you go.

Getting there
Washaway Beach is hidden within the Sydney Harbour National Park section of the Spit to Manly walk. From the city, take a bus from Wynyard to the Spit Bridge and follow the coastal track toward Grotto Point. Look for a narrow, unmarked trail near the Grotto Point Lighthouse along the track. Once you find the entrance, follow the path to the cliff’s edge for the scramble down to the water. Find more info here and plan your travels on Transport for NSW.
