Sydney’s getting a little extra shine this Mardi Gras season—and it’s rolling on four wheels. Transit Systems, one of Australia’s largest (and proudly Australian-owned) bus operators, is taking inclusion to the streets with a dazzling new pride-themed bus that’s now part of its regular city service. Yep, you can actually hop on board—and it’s just one part of how the company is driving pride across Sydney this season.
This year’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is already a vibrant fixture on the calendar, but Transit Systems is adding its own splash of colour—and purpose—to the festivities. The company has unveiled a specially wrapped bus designed to spark conversations, turn heads and show visible solidarity with Sydney’s LGBTQIA+ community.
Showing Up & Being Visible
NSW Managing Director Rino Matarazzo says their Mardi Gras support extends beyond a symbolic push and that it’s part of an ongoing culture of inclusion across the business.
“Transit Systems has been a proud and consistent supporter of Mardi Gras for many years, and we are pleased to continue standing alongside the LGBTQIA+ community,” he said.
In the past, Transit Systems has launched bubblegum-pink and rainbow-wrapped buses that have become local icons during parade season. This year continues that momentum, with the new design cruising city routes throughout the festival period.
“Continuing that support matters. It’s about showing up, being visible, and reinforcing that everyone should feel safe, welcome and accepted when travelling on public transport,” Matarazzo added.
Pride on the Road (and at the Ball)

However, the rainbow ride is only a portion of how Transit Systems is showing up for the community this year. The company will also be providing free charter services for the Sissy Ball on February 27—operating a dedicated route between Central Station, Marrickville Station and Marrickville Town Hall.
The service is free for ticket holders, making it easier (and safer) for partygoers to get to and from the event in true style.
As Matarazzo puts it, their commitment runs deeper than just rainbow paint jobs. “Each year, it’s a chance for us to show our support for the LGBTQ+ community while fostering a culture of inclusion and respect within our workforce. Where we embrace different perspectives, it genuinely allows people to thrive.”
A City That Moves with Pride
Transit Systems’ efforts align perfectly with the broader Mardi Gras mission—and with the new 24-hour public transport and extended trading hours announced by the NSW Government for the festival weekend.
The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) has applauded the move, saying it’s the kind of investment Sydney’s nightlife deserves.
NTIA CEO Mick Gibb called it “a blueprint for what we can do for other major events to further support the night-time economy,” encouraging locals to get out and make this year’s Mardi Gras one to remember.
So, if you see a glowing rainbow bus gliding through the streets this February, don’t just wave at ’em—jump on! Every kilometre this bus travels carries a reminder: Sydney’s at its best when everyone feels welcome.
