If you’re craving salt air, slow mornings, and somewhere new to unwind this summer, you don’t have to go far from Sydney to find an excellent warm-weather escape. Just a stone’s throw from the city, the small town of Avoca Beach offers a charming coastal retreat with all the makings of a perfect weekend away. Think golden beaches, seaside markets, charming boutiques, and top-notch cafes for coffee runs by the water. While nearby hotspots like Terrigal and The Entrance tend to draw the crowds, Avoca offers a more offbeat escape. Spend your days surfing or swimming, browsing the local shops, or settling in for an easy afternoon at a cafe by the water. Here’s how to spend the perfect summer day in Avoca.
Things to do in Avoca this summer

Avoca’s laid-back charm makes it the perfect base for a spontaneous summer getaway with plenty of sun-dappled adventures. The beach may be the main draw, but there’s a whole lot of fun to be had around here.
Start your day exploring the unassuming coastal town at the beach, a honey-hued 1.7km stretch, known for its pristine sand and consistent surf breaks. Or soak up the sun by taking a walk to the rock pool at the southern end of the beach, where locals cool off in the crystal-clear water after a surf. Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from Aquafun Avoca Lake, and meander through the calm waters of this scenic lake, surrounded by lush wetlands and native wildlife. It’s also a serene spot for a swim, or you can cast a line for a chance to reel in a catch like bream or whiting.
Away from the water, a highlight in town is the Avoca Beach Theatre, an iconic local gem that has been screening indie films and hosting community events for years. Whether you’re a movie buff or just in the mood for a quirky night out, this is one spot you must visit. The Avoca Beachside Markets, held once a month by the beach, are a local favourite for fresh produce, local arts, handmade goods, live music, and good vibes.
Other ways to enjoy the town

Avoca’s main street is a delightful mix of cafes, boutiques, and eateries that invite you to slow down, whether you’re after a caffeine fix or hunting for a local vintage find. The cafe scene here is stellar, and locals swear by a few standout spots. The Point Cafe offers relaxed beachside dining with wholesome breakfasts, hearty lunches, cocktails, and epic views on the menu, while Ludo’s Gourmet Kitchen is the spot to go for French-inspired pastries and quality baked treats. Like Minds is another favourite — a cosy, eco-conscious hangout where the food is fresh, local, and served with a zero-waste philosophy, and a yellow floral mural you can’t miss. And no trip to town is complete without a visit to Avoca Beach House for seafood, tapas, and delicious cocktails.
Just a short drive from town, you can explore more coastal magic in the region. Wander down to Copacabana Beach or MacMasters Beach for leisurely swims and laid-back surf breaks, or head to Bouddi National Park, one of the best in the state, famous for its wild beaches, ancient Aboriginal rock carvings, and incredible walks. Summer is the best time to visit, so don’t miss out. Read more about Avoca Beach and find accomodation options here.
