The century-old Strand Hotel continues to be an important part of Darlinghurst. And recent renovations are set to propel the institution to newer heights. After a multi-level restoration, the hotel has reopened with a swanky new rooftop bar and a 17-bedroom house and hotel. The Strand Rooftop comes with Parisian flair and classic bar bites and drinks accompanied by neat views over downtown Sydney.
The Strand Rooftop
With sunny spring days upon us, rooftop bars are the perfect excuse to soak in some sun. With so many excellent options around town, what makes The Strand Rooftop stand out?
“The Strand has been designed with the intimacy and personal service of a boutique hotel, creating a community hub of like-minded people, that makes you want to return again and again. My purpose is for the character of the hotel to grow and continue to build over time, just as if you were building your own home,” designer George Gorrow says.
The bar is lit up with warm festoon lights, vibrant textures and lush greens enveloping the space. Architect Tom de Plater describes it as a “charming escape amongst the anonymity of William Street.”
The menu features light bar bites like rock oysters, zucchini fritters, prawn cocktails, corn gruyere croquettes, charcuterie and cheese, fried chicken and beef sliders. Their signature drinks? The French Tart and Dirty Martini.
Also in the offing is live entertainment. Expect weekly DJs each Friday and Saturday from 6pm to 12am and 4pm to 10pm on Sundays.
If you want to take it a step further, block out a few days for a staycation and check into their hotel which promises a blissful stay. In their 17 newly refurbished suites, guests will find contemporary decor from rattan bed heads, deep green finishings and contrasting dark floorboards. From a charming, laidback sleeper for one to luxe deluxe residential-style rooms, there’s something to fit all needs.
While there, don’t forget to check out The Strand Bistro for beluga caviar, duck leg pie served with grilled broccolini, hearty steak frites and more. The food menu is accompanied by an extensive drinks list comprising a line-up of French and Australian wines, aperitifs, cocktails, beers and 49 whiskies.
