Iconic diner Tetsuya’s is set to close permanently this July after a nearly 40-year run. Well known for its eight-course degustation menu and comprehensive wine list, the restaurant had previously announced it would relocate from its familiar Kent Street site due to the building’s ongoing redevelopment. The restaurant announced its closure after plans to relocate fell through.
“Our plans to relocate Tetsuya’s to a new site after it closes at the end of July have unfortunately not worked out. I have made the very difficult decision to permanently close the restaurant,” chef and owner Tetsuya Wakuda said in a statement.
“We have spent the last 18 months planning the move and the new restaurant so this was not an easy decision, but sometimes things just don’t go to plan,” he added.
Tetsuya’s launched in Rozelle in 1989 and found its popular Kent Street home in 2000, quickly becoming a go-to spot for Sydneysiders looking to ring in special occasions. The restaurant’s famed confit ocean trout with celery salad and roe was once dubbed the “the most photographed dish in the world” and has received local and worldwide acclaim. Tetsuya’s is home to a dining space that overlooks a quaint Japanese garden infusing traditional design with the contemporary cuisine of Japan.
This will no doubt be sad news for Sydney foodies but Tetsuya’s will remain open until July 31 so book a table on the website while you still can.
