Sydney is adding a new waterfront arrival to its Fish Market, with a proposed ferry wharf offering visitors a fresh way to reach one of the city’s biggest food destinations.
Unveiled on 9th October, the design for the new Fish Market Wharf will connect Blackwattle Bay with Barangaroo, giving locals and visitors another way to travel across Sydney Harbour. Construction preparation is expected to begin in late 2026, with ferry services planned for late 2027.
A new way to reach Sydney Fish Market

The wharf will sit beside the new Sydney Fish Market, which opened in January 2026 and expects to welcome more than six million visitors each year.
The $30 million project forms part of a broader $70 million investment in transport access to the precinct, including a $40 million accessibility upgrade at Wentworth Park light rail stop and 150 additional weekly services on the L1 Dulwich Hill Line.
The proposed design takes inspiration from Sydney’s existing ferry wharves, with a curved zinc roof set to develop a natural patina as it weathers.
Plans include covered waiting areas, seating, real-time service information, Opal card readers and fully accessible facilities. Safety features will include lighting, CCTV, handrails, help points and life-saving equipment.
A floating ferry pontoon will sit alongside berthing space for fishing and recreational vessels. Construction crews will remove two existing wharf structures from the former fish market site to improve navigation and access.
Another stop on Sydney’s ferry network

The Fish Market Wharf will join a series of ferry network changes across Sydney’s Inner West. Sydney has restored weekday peak ferry services to Balmain West after more than a decade and reactivated the Pirrama Park stop in Pyrmont.
A new Walsh Bay stop will join the network in early 2027, connecting passengers with the Parramatta River and Cockatoo Island ferry routes.
The new Fish Market connection will add another link between the Inner West, the CBD and Sydney’s waterfront attractions, making it easier to pair a ferry ride with a visit to the market’s seafood counters and eateries.
When will the Fish Market ferry wharf open?

Work crews will begin preparing the site in late 2026, with ferry services scheduled to launch in late 2027. Authorities are still finalising the timetable, operating arrangements and vessel options.
A temporary maritime exclusion zone will operate around the construction site, with boating operators and other water users to be notified before work begins.
Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Marjorie O’Neill said: “Our world class fish market deserves world class transport, and what better than our harbour ferry network to deliver it.”
When the wharf opens, visitors will have another way to arrive at Sydney Fish Market, with the journey itself offering a chance to take in the harbour along the way.
