St Alma is redefining Mexican dining, one shared platter at a time.
There’s good reason to start planning a trip to the Northern Beaches especially with margarita season well and truly upon us. Popular restaurant Alma’s sister diner — St Alma, has opened its doors in the beachside suburb of Freshwater offering premium Mexican food and drinks along with all the good vibes.
St Alma, Freshwater
Providing diners with a blend of Mexican cuisine and culture along with a taste of Australia’s breezy beachside living, the restaurant is the brainchild of co-founders Jack Leary and Chef Tim Christensen.
On offer are premium food and drinks, great service and a charming ambience. After spending considerable time travelling around Mexico and dining in a number of local eateries, Leary and Christensen are bringing all the goodness of the east coast and southwest of Mexico and blending it with Australia’s excellent local produce and ingredients.
“What people don’t know is we signed a lease in Freshwater back in 2017 before opening Avalon, but unfortunately it fell through. Ever since Freshwater has been on our wish list for a restaurant venue — you can’t beat the location for its beach vibe and sense of community,” Leary says, speaking of their new venture.
The menu at St Alma leans heavily towards authentic Mexican cuisine with market fresh produce sourced daily from Brookvale and across the Northern Beaches.
On the menu are starters, ceviche, tacos and delicious desserts with a heavy focus on sharing plates. Highlights include corn truffle empanadas with portobello mushrooms, sweet corn and corn truffle and a sublime scallop aguachile along with tecate battered fish and grilled fish tacos.
Also on the menu is black bean hummus with jalapeno-infused olive oil, crispy pork belly and beef ribs coated generously with an agave glaze.
As for the drinks menu, there are cocktails and margaritas galore including five types of fancy margaritas and a variety of Mexican beers. Cool down with a white chocolate and coconut margarita or enjoy the Australiano featuring a heady concoction of herradura strawberry gum tequila, lime, davidson plum cointreau, agave, nasturtium and salt.
St Alma is now open Tuesday-Thursday, 4 to 10:30pm and Friday-Sunday, 12-10:30pm.
