Oh Happy Day! Did you know that the iconic Sister Act film, starring Whoopi Goldberg, has its own musical? And it’s coming to Australia for the very first time. Put on your habit and get ready to sing praises to this smash-hit musical comedy. After blessing Broadway and the UK with its presence, the Sister Act musical will make its Australian premiere at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney this August. After that, it will come to the Regent Theatre in Melbourne, and dazzle audiences from November.
Sister Act Musical
This hilarious musical is based on the 1992 movie. It features original music from Tony and Oscar award-winner Alan Menken, the same composer behind Disney’s Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. You’ll feel uplifted with tunes inspired by Motown, soul and disco.
This divine show is all about disco diva Deloris, who witnesses a murder and is placed in protective custody. Hidden in a convent, she helps her fellow sisters find their voices in a struggling choir, and unexpectedly rediscovers her own.
“It is a joyous thing to produce a musical that has never been seen in Australia before and I feel very blessed to be bringing Sister Act to our shores,” said producer John Frost. “It’s a brilliant, must-see show that will lift audiences up and I know Australians will get into the habit of seeing again and again.”
The Sister Act musical was nominated for five Tony awards, including Best Musical, as well as six Olivier Awards. The creative team includes Alan Menken (Music), Glenn Slater (Lyrics), Cheri and Bill Steinkellner (Book), Bill Buckhurst (Director) and Alistair David (Choreographer).
