Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney
Nestled in the heart of Sydney CBD with glittering harbour views, Australia’s oldest botanic garden is a year-round delight and presents 30 hectares of recreation areas, event spaces, and a stunning collection of plants from Australia and around the world. While not exactly under the radar, the lush space offers a peaceful oasis just steps from the city centre where the incessant hum of Sydney seems to disappear. Established in 1816, it is considered the oldest scientific institution in the country and features a dreamy rose garden, themed areas, and plenty of activities and events throughout the year.
Highlights of the garden
There are several cool spaces to enjoy in the gardens and entry is free except for some ticketed events.
One of the most impressive spots in the gardens is The Calyx, a giant wall adorned with thousands of colourful flowers making it one of the largest green walls in the southern hemisphere. Home to gorgeous seasonal horticulture displays, this Instagrammable space is a must-visit to get your fill of flowers. From here, make a beeline to the Rose Garden and Pavilion an elegant space punctuated with the scent of sweet-smelling flowers and pleasing florals from May to September. Flower lovers will also love the Flower Bed Lawn which features manicured flower beds flanked by stunning views of the harbour.
The Mare and Foal Lawn is ideal to enjoy a picnic on a sunny day and enjoy lovely views of the Sydney Harbour. On a hot day, the Fig Tree Lawn provides ample shade under towering fig trees and an intimate setting for special occasions.
The garden also hosts a number of ticketed events over the year including Aboriginal heritage tours, astronomy tours, ghost tours, guided walks and plant sales among others. Check out what’s on and read more about the culturally significant spot on the Botanic Gardens website.
