Japanese cuisine is rich in variety, expanding well beyond ramen and sushi and Sydney has embraced this diversity with a stellar variety of Japanese dining experiences including upscale omakase diners to laidback yakitori joints. For those unfamiliar, Japan is divided into 9 distinct regions, which are further split into 47 smaller prefectures and now a 48th prefecture will come to life, right here in Sydney. Prefecture 48 is a new dining precinct courtesy of hospitality group Azabu and it will feature a cracking line-up of Japanese eateries including a whisky bar and dedicated patisseries. Here’s what you need to know about this exciting addition to Sydney’s culinary scene.
Prefecture 48, Sydney
Aiming to capture the essence of these diverse districts, the new dining precinct will feature 6 venues across three floors. Housed within a heritage-listed Victorian warehouse in the heart of the CBD, diners can expect the following eateries:
- Garaku serving a theatrical Kaiseki dining experience spearheaded by ex-Tetsuya Executive Head Chef, Derek Kim
- Ibushi which brings the buzz and energy of Tokyo’s lively streets to the precinct
- Omakase, a chic 8-people venue that promises to take the ‘chef’s table’ experience to the next level with guest chefs and more
- Five featuring a menu of European and Japanese delicacies
- Whisky Thief, a bar slinging delicious cocktails and bottles hidden behind several corners of the space by the Maybe Sammy crew
- Dear Florence, a cosy patisserie serving cakes, chocolates, and baked goods.
Several of the city’s best chefs will come together for this new experience including Hiroshi Manaka, Chris Kim, and more. The elegant decor will also feature works and installations by celebrated Japanese artists from around the globe.
