Some of Western Sydney‘s most significant buildings and hidden spaces are set to soon open their doors to the public, offering a unique opportunity to explore places that are usually off limits. From heritage landmarks to striking contemporary buildings recognised for their innovative design, the brand new Parramatta Open event will invite visitors to experience the city’s architecture and evolving identity from a different perspective. Taking place for one day only in August, the program brings together guided tours, talks and behind-the-scenes access across a diverse mix of locations, celebrating one of the country’s oldest settlements as it continues to transform into a major cultural and civic hub. What to expect at Parramatta Open
Ticket holders will have access to 16 buildings and sites across Parramatta CBD and surrounding precincts, ranging from some of Australia’s oldest heritage landmarks to award-winning contemporary buildings. Many of the locations are rarely accessible to the public, so visitors will have the chance to step inside significant civic buildings, historic institutions and cultural spaces that are not normally open for exploration.
Alongside self-guided visits, the day will feature a packed program of talks, guided tours, performances and other activities designed to showcase the history behind each location. Visitors can personalise their itinerary using an online event planner and interactive map, making it easy to explore at their own pace throughout the day.
Among the highlights are Old Government House, Australia’s oldest surviving public building and a UNESCO World Heritage site; Parramatta Female Factory, where thousands of convict women and children once lived, the award-winning PHIVE library and Parramatta Town Hall at Parramatta Square, the Parramatta Aquatic Centre, Lancer Barracks and Museum, St John’s Anglican Cathedral, St Patrick’s Cathedral, and the St Patrick’s Cemetery Mortuary Chapel, which will be opening to visitors exclusively for the event.
