Are you ready for a night at the theatre?
Not too long ago things like going to the theatre, attending a concert or even just meetings friends and family seemed far fetched. Despite everything the state has collectively endured in the last couple of months, one thing’s for sure — life goes on. Opera Australia has embraced the new normal by announcing a return to regular programming with a massive line-up of events.
“It’s been a very difficult time for our performers and the arts industry as a whole, so I’m sure audiences are looking forward to returning to the theatre just as much as we are, and I’m confident the coming season has something for everyone,” Opera Australia’s Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini said.
Opera Australia 2022 season for Sydney
So what can theatre enthusiasts look forward to? As has been tradition for nearly ten years, Gale Edward’s glorious production of La Bohème will kick off the summer season on New Year’s Eve. This could also be the final time the production at the Joan Sutherland Theatre, so you’ll want to add this to your calendar.
Other highlights include La Juive, a co-production with Opera de Lyon, the much-awaited return of The Marriage of Figaro and Otello among others.
Sydneysiders will be excited to see the return of Stacey Alleaume who floored audiences with her performance as Violetta in Elijah Moshinsky’s La Traviata in the 2021 Handa Opera.
And of course, there’s the highly anticipated production of The Phantom of the Opera on the Sydney Harbour and a dazzling new production of Bizet’s Carmen by director Liesel Badorrek on Cockatoo Island.
