The famed walks of NSW span beaches, forests, and mountains — and this year, locals are being rewarded with a wave of new trails. From the Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk, which winds through ancient rainforest and waterfalls, to Sydney’s new Middle Head–Gubbuh Gubbuh to Georges Head track, which blends military history with sweeping coastal views, there’s no better time to lace up and explore. A fresh new trail now leads hikers from coast to coast, showcasing some of the NSW South Coast’s most picturesque landscapes along the way. Munjip Trail is a 15km walk in Eurobodalla that offers a perfect blend of history, culture, ocean, and bushland. Here’s why this coastal trail should be on your radar this winter.
Munjip Trail, NSW
The Munjip Trail takes its name from the Dhurga language, meaning “walking together, let’s go.” Tucked away on the Eurobodalla coast, the recently upgraded track is a true hidden gem, blending bush, beach, and First Nations significance in one scenic stretch.
Set along an untamed coastline, the Munjip Trail carves a path between Batemans Bay and McKenzies Beach, offering a 15km journey through windswept headlands, quaint small towns, remote beaches, and native bushland. Keep an eye out for local wildlife and migrating whales too; this region is a prime location for whale watching in Australia during the winter months.
Formerly known as the Batemans Bay Coastal Headlands walking trail, the route was renamed the Munjip Trail following consultation with Traditional Owners. The cultural significance of this region is woven into the trail itself. Along the way, walkers can hear stories from the Walbunja People and take in local art, murals, interpretive signs, timber message poles, and audio posts.
The new and improved trail now features steps, footbridges, lookouts, fences, and signage after significant upgrades that wrapped up in early 2025. At 15km, the trail can be easily tackled in a day or broken into smaller sections if you’d rather soak up the scenery at a slower pace. Take your swimmers along, you’ll pass wild and wonderful beaches like Sunshine Cove and Mckenzies along the way, well worth a mid-hike dip.

How to get there
The Munjip Trail runs between Batemans Bay and McKenzies Beach, and you can walk it in either direction. From Sydney, expect a 3.5 to 5-hour drive, with the choice of a coastal journey down the M1 or a scenic inland route through Goulburn and Braidwood. Because the trail isn’t a loop, a car shuffle is your best bet; leave one vehicle at the end of the trail, then drive to the start in the other. Parking is available at both ends.
