Following the opening of a stunning new coastal walk on the South Coast, Sydney has just welcomed a brand new trail of its own. Connecting Middle Head–Gubbuh Gubbuh and Georges Head, the newly opened trail in Sydney Harbour National Park will be especially appealing to history buffs. The 3km walking trail takes visitors on a fascinating exploration of Sydney’s defense history, spanning over 220 years. Sprinkled throughout the trail are a variety of restored military structures dating from 1801 to the Vietnam War, along with informative signage and digital animation to highlight the site’s past and its significance. Since Sydney is bookmarked by crystal clear waters and beaches, ocean views are available in abundance. Here’s everything you need to know about the new track.
Middle Head–Gubbuh Gubbuh to Georges Head walking track

Gubbuh Gubbuh is one of Sydney Harbour’s seven headlands and a place of cultural and historical significance. Developed over six years, the $9.5 million project creates a link between the headlands, connecting to Chowder Bay and the Bondi to Manly Walk, so a variety of coastal landscapes are on offer.
Aside from lovely ocean views, lush bushland, and a chance to reconnect with nature, highlights of the track include WWII-era twin 6-pounder gun casemates and fortifications like the inner and outer defensive ditches, designed to defend against land-based attacks. Keep an eye out for the well-preserved 19th-century NSW School of Artillery buildings in North Head.
The track also features new lookouts including ‘The Belvedere’ lookout that offers sweeping views across Sydney Harbour and an impressive new bridge.
