The Blue Mountains are home to some of NSW’s most spectacular natural wonders, from dramatic waterfalls and ancient rainforest walks to picturesque small towns. Now one of the region’s most remarkable destinations could soon offer visitors an entirely new way to experience its beauty. Perched 1,000 metres above sea level, the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden at Mount Tomah holds the distinction of being the highest botanic garden in the Southern Hemisphere. Plans are now taking shape to introduce overnight accommodation for the first time, potentially allowing visitors to wake up surrounded by cool-climate gardens, mountain scenery and sweeping wilderness views. Here’s what we know about the proposal so far.
Overnight stays could be coming to Mount Tomah

Botanic Gardens of Sydney has officially invited tourism operators and investors to submit proposals for accommodation within the garden, opening the door to everything from luxury cabins and boutique eco-lodges to glamping sites and tiny homes.
Three potential locations have been identified. The Jungle Lodge precinct could see new accommodation built around an existing cabin, while the Conservation Area presents opportunities for secluded stays surrounded by native bushland. A third location, the Sunrise Area, could accommodate smaller retreats within the garden itself.
NSW Tourism Minister Steve Kamper said the initiative could encourage visitors to spend more time exploring the region. “We want to see innovative accommodation that makes the most of Mount Tomah’s spectacular setting, gives visitors a reason to stay longer and supports businesses across the region,” he said.
The garden already attracts more than 220,000 visitors annually, but overnight stays remain in the planning stages. Expressions of interest close on 20 November 2026, with operators yet to be selected and no opening date announced.
