To make up for yet another week of transport chaos, this time caused by a power issue and rain, Sydney commuters will ride trains for free this coming Monday. The NSW Government announced the move in order to offset the delays and added expenses caused by the disruptions. While the fare-free day will offer some relief for commuters across Sydney, it won’t cover all forms of transport. Here’s what’s included, and what’s not.
Fare-free public transport in Sydney
On Monday, May 26, Sydney passengers can ride the city’s trains and metro services for free. But carry your wallet with you, the fare-free day doesn’t cover buses, ferries, or light rail, so regular fares still apply for those. Opal gates and readers will be turned off during this period so customers are not required to tap on or off on their journeys.
Chaos hit Australia’s busiest suburban rail network on Tuesday afternoon when a live overhead wire collapsed onto a train roof, triggering major delays.
“In no way is that going to make up for the disruption of the last 24 hours, but hopefully it can go some way to alleviate the financial burden families have had to deal with over the last day,” Premier Chris Minns told 2GB.
Although repairs to the overhead wiring have been completed, commuters have been warned to expect some delays in the coming days.
The fare-free day applies only on Monday from 12.01am to 11.59pm. Find more details on Transport for NSW.
