We firmly believe the best way to appreciate NSW’s beautiful natural landscapes is on your own two feet. From stunning coastal walks to multi-day hikes, there’s no shortage of hiking trails when you feel the need to leave it all behind. If you’re short on time but yearning for a break from the city, we’ve got the perfect hike for you. The Minnamurra Rainforest in Budderoo National Park is a short drive from Sydney and it’s a must-visit while exploring the picturesque South Coast near Kiama, or the Southern Highlands.
The rainforest conveniently offers two walking tracks, one of which is a short meandering hike of just 1.6km called the Rainforest Loop Walk or Lyrebird Loop Walk. Traversing a network of suspension bridges and viewing platforms with a bird’s eye view of the rainforest, the short but spectacular walk is the perfect way to experience the sublime beauty of this rainforest icon in NSW.
Rainforest Loop Walk
This tree-lined scenic walk is a paved track with two suspension bridges that cross over the beautiful Minnamurra River flanking a panoramic view of the ancient rainforest. There are also multiple viewing platforms where you can stop and admire this primeval ecosystem’s immersive, Jurassic-like beauty. An easy, relaxed hike, this walk is perfect for all fitness levels and a big hit among city folks and families. The first 500m of the walk also provides assisted wheelchair access. You can spot a variety of plants on the way like cabbage palms, banksia, strangler figs and even rare orchids. Plus keep an eye out for local wildlife, especially the elusive lyrebird, known to be capable of imitating almost any sound.
Halfway around the Loop, you can deviate up to the 2.6-kilometre paved Falls Walk if you want more out of your rainforest sojourn. While more challenging, hikers are rewarded with stunning vistas over the rainforest canopy, lush rainforest foliage, an abundance of local flora and fauna and views of the gorge carved by Minnamurra Rivulet. Keen to embark on both walks? You’ll be looking to cover a total walking distance of 4.2km.
