The Illawarra Road storefront formerly home to Alex ‘N’ Rolls has reopened under new management as Viet Bling. Taking over the familiar Marrickville space beneath the blue awning, the new Vietnamese street food eatery is serving a menu inspired by the site’s well-known earlier classics.
The change marks a new chapter for one of Marrickville’s most talked-about banh mi addresses. Before closing late last year, Alex ‘N’ Rolls had developed a cult following thanks to its generously filled rolls and unconventional approach to business, with trading hours often treated more as a suggestion than a guarantee.
Despite the unpredictability, customers regularly queued for its roast pork banh mi, helping cement the shop’s reputation as a local institution.
The new operators are hoping to retain much of what made the address so popular while introducing their own take on Vietnamese street food. Familiar favourites remain at the heart of the menu, but the refreshed concept also brings a greater focus on consistency, giving regulars a more reliable way to enjoy the dishes that made the shop famous.
Menu staples & a reliable schedule
Diners can find the familiar crusty baguettes filled with crispy roasted pork, shredded carrots and a heavy layer of pork floss. The menu extends beyond banh mi, with the kitchen also serving sticky rice plates topped with sliced red barbecue pork, a folded omelet, pickled vegetables and crispy fried shallots.
The transition to Viet Bling brings a notable operational change to 321 Illawarra Road. The previous establishment was known for its unpredictable trading times, which previously led residents to create a dedicated Facebook group with over 10,000 members simply to track whether the shop was open on any given day.
The new storefront eliminates the guesswork for local diners by operating with regular, set opening hours.
