Wassily Kandinsky’s groundbreaking abstract art is currently on display at the Art Gallery of NSW. Now a separate exhibition is about to kick off at the gallery and it’s bringing giant metal spiders, mirrors and surreal floating sculptures to Sydney. Louise Bourgeois: Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day? arrives in Sydney on November 25 and as part of the showcase, a nine-metre-high spider sculpture titled ‘Maman’ has taken residence at the AGNSW forecourt. Weighing nearly 10 tonnes and made of bronze, steel and marble, this is one of the French-American artist’s best-known and most iconic works. The name ‘Maman’ translates to mother from French to English and was built in memory of Bourgeois’ late mother.
