What to see at Cowra Japanese Garden
Created to honour the longstanding connection between Cowra and Japan, the garden was designed by renowned Japanese landscape architect Ken Nakajima and officially opened in 1979. Today, it is regarded as one of the most significant and largest Japanese gardens outside Japan and has become one of regional NSW’s most beloved attractions.
Spread across more than 12 acres, the garden invites visitors to wander past tranquil lakes, cross charming bridges and follow meandering streams that weave through perfectly manicured gardens. Hidden among the lush greenery are a variety of traditional Japanese elements, including an open-air tea house where traditional tea ceremonies are occasionally held, a replica Edo cottage offering a glimpse into historic Japanese architecture, and a bonsai house showcasing the intricate art of miniature tree cultivation. Visitors can also explore the adjoining cultural centre, home to Japanese artefacts and artworks, before stopping by the cafe for lunch, coffee and cake overlooking the gardens.
While many people visit during the colourful spring and autumn months, winter is also a beautiful time to explore the gardens. The cooler temperatures make it ideal for leisurely walks through the expansive grounds, and the quieter season adds to the peaceful atmosphere especially if you’re trying to escape the crowds of the busier mountain towns.
