A 20-kilometre cycling trail has opened in the Illawarra, just a stone’s throw from Sydney. This marks the first phase of the $13.4 million Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Network, which will eventually span a whopping 70 kilometres. The Kembla Mountain Bike Trails, opened in September this year, catering to cyclists of all skill levels and offering an exciting mix of family-friendly paths and more challenging routes for those seeking an adrenaline rush. Lined with incredible views and promising epic rides through the beautiful Illawarra Escarpment, this new trail is the perfect summer adventure, and free to access.
Kembla Mountain Bike Trails

The Kembla Mountain Bike Trails have been meticulously designed with something for everyone, from casual riders to experienced mountain bikers. With 4 green runs, 13 blue runs, and 8 black runs, cyclists can choose routes that match their skill level and adventure goals. The trails wind through the wild and wonderful landscape of the Illawarra Escarpment, offering riders a chance to get back in nature and soak up the natural diversity and rugged beauty of the region.
The project is a close collaboration between the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, Wollongong City Council, and the local community, and has been built with sustainability in mind, with every trail carefully planned to protect the local ecosystem while providing a top-tier experience for riders. Input from both residents and cycling enthusiasts was taken on board, ensuring minimal environmental impact while maximizing the riding experience.
Stage two of the Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Network is already in the works, with construction set to begin in early 2026. This expansion will add another 50 kilometres to the network, making the Illawarra region the go-to destination for biking enthusiasts.
